Often times it can be difficult to completely understand everything that needs to be done when it comes to search engine optimization because it is a very transparent approach at times. If you don’t closely monitor website traffic and visitors through analytics info you could have a hard time determining the benefit of conducting search engine optimization. There are some areas to avoid when you get started and it is imperative you do for the safety and success of your website.


Here are some common SEO mistakes that I run into, that I recommend that you avoid, of course I did not put these in any particular order:

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #1 - Not Using Analytics: Follow analytics closely so you can visually see your progress. The numbers don’t lie. How can you know what is working well long term with your SEO program? Use an analytics program.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #2 – Don’t Think About Blackhat SEO: Follow the rules. Don’t do it, you might be enticed to want to approach the black hat area but it could lead to SEO disaster if you do.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #3 - Rely on Directory Submissions: Yes directories where once important but those days are long gone. Some are good but don’t worry too much about directories as part of your link building efforts. Seriously directories are so 1999!

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #4 – Expect Miracles: Search engine optimization takes time so don’t expect to see an increase in anything by the end of the week. In fact, this is an issue that I see as a big one. If you have the mindset from day one that SEO is a long term building process then you will set yourself for a great long term success.


Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #5 – Targeting Wrong Keywords: Targeting the wrong keywords could cause you to really spin your wheels and not get anywhere. Make sure your keywords are the right keywords.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #6 - Using Flash: Don’t build your website on flash because your website will almost never be visible. A better option is to use flash for certain aspects of your site but make sure your content is crawlable by the search engines.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #7 – Ignoring URL Structures: Don’t forget to come to the table with unique and clean URL structures; they are also very important to your search engine optimization efforts.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #8 – Lack Of Keywords: Lack of utilization of keywords in your content will not help you. Search engines are readers so if they can’t read your keywords you simply won’t rank for them.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #9- Using Duplicate Content: Duplicate content is an error I see quite often occurring on websites. Not only is it a bad user experience but the complications that could occur from penalties is just scary to think about.

Easy SEO Mistake to Avoid #9 - Over Optimization: Yes this is common also. Meta tags that just trail off the side of the monitor and content that is so littered with keywords it is impossible to read is a bad idea.
It takes time to learn what to do and what not to do but these mistakes should be avoided at all costs when starting your SEO campaign. Remember Rome (or any other major city) was NOT built in a day!
